Mark 4:10–12 — Why Parables?

# Mark 4:10–12 — Why Parables?**Anchor Text** But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable. And He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables, so that, ‘Seeing they may see and not perceive, And hearing they may hear and not understand; Lest they should turn, And their sins be forgiven them.’”(Mark 4:10–12 NKJV)---This passage marks a turning point. After telling the parable of the sower, Jesus explains to His disciples why He uses parables at all. The parables reveal the kingdom to those on the inside, while concealing it from those on the outside. This distinction would have struck the first readers of Mark — the kingdom is both revealed and hidden. We discussed how this functions as a **transition blog**: - Recapping Jesus’ ministry so far. - Introducing the section of parables. - Explaining what parables are in first-century context. - Showing how Mark includes some parables while Matthew and Luke record others. - Preparing the reader to listen carefully, because the parables are about the **Presence, People, and Principles of the Kingdom.**---### References - Isaiah 6:9–10 — The source of Jesus’ quotation. - Matthew 13:10–17; Luke 8:9–10 — Parallel accounts with fuller explanation. - Craig S.
